Whether you've got a three-day weekend coming up that you want to take advantage of or you're looking for a getaway from Springfield, MO, we have some suggestions to make the most of your weekend trip.

1. Ozarks at Big Cedar

Distance from Springfield: 1 hour

Where to stay: Big Cedar Lodge

Nearby Dogwood Canyon Nature Park is 10,000 acres of some of the Ozark Mountains’ best scenery. Streams, waterfalls, ancient burial caves and bridges dot the area, and visitors can go on a self-guided walk or bike around the property. Take advantage of the fishing, horseback riding, and tram tours.

2. Des Moines, Iowa

Distance from Springfield: 5 hours

Where to stay: Des Lux Hotel

Downtown on the east side of the Des Moines River is one of the city’s original commerce areas. The district includes buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Shops and businesses line the streets including ice skating, galleries, and boutiques.

3. Jefferson City, Missouri

Distance from Springfield: 4.5 hours

Where to stay: Victoria's Place by the River

The weather does not need to be sweltering for you to enjoy an ice cream cone from Central Dairy. The parlor is a popular historical Jefferson City staple and famous for its banana splits. If that’s not your thing, try one of the ice cream dishes, sodas, malts, shakes or sundaes.

4. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Where to stay: The Skirvin Hilton

Internationally renowned for its collection of western art and artifacts, National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is the best way to kick off your weekend in OKC. View Native American artifacts, see historical cowboy gear and view galleries that tell the stories of Native Americans.
