1. Ozarks at Big Cedar

Distance from Springfield: 1 hour

Where to stay: Big Cedar Lodge

Nearby Dogwood Canyon Nature Park is 10,000 acres of some of the Ozark Mountains’ best scenery. Downtown on the east side of the Des Moines River is one of the city’s original commerce areas. The district includes buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Shops and businesses line the streets including ice skating, galleries, and boutiques.

3. Jefferson City, Missouri

The weather does not need to be sweltering for you to enjoy an ice cream cone from Central Dairy. The parlor is a popular historical Jefferson City staple and famous for its banana splits. If that’s not your thing, try one of the ice cream dishes, sodas, malts, shakes or sundaes.
